  This material is an interesting story with   profound meaning. The king is looking for his successor and thinks of the   challenge. Kate perfectly finished the tasks and showed her suitable traits   (cleverness and value of common people) for being a ruler. Students will find   the story attractive and fun to read. They will reflect on their own   experience of facing challenges in daily life and either success or failure   when meeting them. The story should be made full use of to facilitate   students’ understanding and internalization.

Learner analysis

  Learners are from Grade 6. They have learnt   English for more than three year, so they have some basic English knowledge.   This story is fun to read and have deep meanings. Students can easily relate   to it and express their unique feelings and opinions. Their reading skills   need to be high lightened. The more attention will be paid on their thinking   abilities.

Teaching objectives

  At the end of this lesson, students should   be able to:

1.Understand the story as a whole with the help of   story map and try to act it out.

2.Learn to read cooperatively and individually and   guess the meaning of words in the context.

3.Think logically and critically by finding out why   Kate can be the ruler.

4.Express their own views about the king’s challenge.
